I cannot believe what I just read.
A parent, concerned about her seventh grade daughter’s fluctuating (dropping) grades asked the question of the school’s guidance counselor only to receive this answer:
“There are a number of reasons for this pattern. First of all, 7th grade is when instruction becomes highly differentiated between skill levels and bright students are much more challenged in class.”
WHAAAT?? This answer is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen published. I cannot believe that someone in education in this day and age would basically tell a mother, “Your daughter is falling behind because she is not one of the bright ones in the class.” WHAT A JOKE!
Parents. Why do you put up with these kind of answers? Do you believe this is true of this particular girl, that she mustn’t be one of the smart ones because her grades are low?
There are so many reasons as to why grades are slipping. Perhaps she has a terrible teacher, that has no idea how to make the subject matter come alive for students. Perhaps the daughter is tired and needs to change her diet in order to have better concentration in class. Perhaps what is considered “bright” is skewed by what tradition tells us bright is.
Or, you know what? Maybe she’s just not that bright.
But I doubt it. In fact I can prove the opposite.
